The Global Legal Post: How the war in Ukraine has created a new field of legal practice

By Daniel Bilak

October 2026 – In a recent article for The Global Legal Post, published on 23 October, Daniel Bilak, Managing Partner of Kinstellar Ukraine, shares his personal account of what managing a law firm in Kyiv looks like on the ground today and how the war has transformed Ukraine’s legal landscape.

Daniel describes a daily reality few of us can imagine. Five or six times a day, the team heads to the office bomb shelter as air raid sirens sound. One colleague’s car was lifted off the road by a nearby blast and another’s apartment windows were blown out. Yet, as Daniel writes, “Like the rest of the country, the office pulled together.”

Defence and military technology work now accounts for a significant part of the Kyiv office’s practice, spanning areas from corporate and M&A to export controls, procurement, and dispute resolution.

“For anyone watching where international legal services are heading, Ukraine is more than a risk to be managed. Billions of dollars will flow into rebuilding its transport, agribusiness and energy infrastructure once the war ends,” says Daniel.
